Socio-Emotional Learning

 

Protocol: In groups of three, students use the "IESCAPE" Therapeutic Crisis Intervention strategy to practice mediation and strategies to solve real-life problems.

 

Emotion words: frustrated, embarrassed, enraged, furious, overwhelmed, disappointed, suspicious

 

IESCAPE Steps and Sentence Starters

I: Isolate the student in crisis

”Can we talk over here?”

E: Explore the student’s point of view

”Tell me what happened.”
“What happened next?”
“Is there anything else you’d like to add?”

S: Summarize the student’s story of the event

”I’m going to tell you what I heard you say.”
”Did I miss anything? Would you like to add anything?”

C: Connect the student’s feelings to his/her behaviors

”I’ve noticed that when you feel ______, you often _______. For example…”

A: Alternate behaviors discussed to suggest more appropriate ways to respond in the future

”What do you think you could do next time you feel that way?”
”Do you REALLY think you could do that?”
(If student is struggling to come up with ideas, suggest: Tell a teacher; Take three deep breaths; Count to ten; Write down your feelings; Ask to go for a walk; Ask to speak to a peer mediator)

P: Plan and practice two new behaviors to be used in similar situations

”Let’s try it out! Pretend you’re feeling ______ because _____...”

E: Enter the student back into the classroom

”Are you ready to go back to class?”
”Would you like me to walk with you?”
”Would you like to sit near me when we get inside?”
